Pressing Matters Insert

Pressing Matters magazine announced they were setting up a competition for their insert page for issue 16. It would allow involved print makers to be in with a chance to have their art work on the insert page or featured in a showcase of creativity in the July edition of Pressing Matters magazine.

Pressing Matters

A magazine released quarterly created by printmakers for printmakers.

The theme for the competition is red and black printed on A4 white paper. Initially i thought of Little Red Riding Hood and her bright red cape constrasting with the wolf. But after a few sketches that i wasn’t quite happy with i decided to scrap the idea and look into red animals. I came across an insanely cute looking frog called the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog! So i sketched a few compositions of this frog and settled on the composition in my final image.

I decided to add some floral features around the frog on the leaf as it looked a little empty without (middle image above). I then used the black and red ink to create the image on the right above. I felt a little deflated by the reveal of the final image and realised the red leaf was drowning out the frog. So, i chipped away at the red layer of lino to focus on the frog only and i was so much more happier with the overall look of the print!

Both of these versions (the red and black and black and white) are available on my Etsy. Click any of the images above to be taken to the listing. If you would like to view more entries for the Pressing Matters competition then please view the hashtag #pressingmattersinsert16 on instagram.
